Happy Makara Sankranti

Wishing all a very Happy Makara Sankranti .
"Yellu bella thindu volle mathu adu "..... The transition in suns path from dakshinayana to uttarayana.. in makara rashi is the significance of the day . The transition from cold days to warmer days, beginning of the harvesting . All these are part of the festival . For kids its new dress, sugarcanes, sweets, yummy pongal and many more . For believers its matter of transition to harvesting . All in all its a combination of scientific calculations and believes .

Girls going to neighbors , friends place and giving them sugarcane and jaggary (yellu bella) signifies sharing of joy . Not to mention helps increase contacts in scientific terms :P. This relation between science exists , and will continue to exist . A specialty of India!

The umpire decision "Ponting says its out!!"

For most of the 2nd test match , it was not much of cricket but more of the heated rivalry . And correctly so . Its good to see Indians showing their dominance for once by backing up a team member and lifting the spirits . In a country where cricket is a religion and still a gentleman's game , the respect for the Aussies has gone from bad to worse . If it existed at the first place .

With appeals like "thats out coz we are Aussies" going around in a test match , seldom does the opposite team get a chance to have its say . The "Bhajji" factor and that of the racial abuse angered the Indian cricket lovers. And to put it blankly the whole test match went on like this

Ponting :We Aussies start the match, with the old blind Bucknor in our "pockets" we can take atleast 2-3 wickets of Indians before first drinks break
Gilchrist :Are u sure u told him to wake up when we appeal
Symonds:Dont worry ill scare him to death with my shouts . He will have to raise his hand no matter what
Ponting: Symonds be careful , all media will be watching . Dont let them get to know your monkey truth

Windows on Ubuntu! Vmware

Well for those of you who would not want windows to take up much of your disk space and want the operating system , here is the choice, Vmware . Its a old and well known tool. I tried it on my machine running Ubuntu 7.10 and works like charm :) . So instead of having all those grub and boot loading problems switch on and switch off any OS you like. I am also running Sloaris(build 55) on it with no issues.

Yes its festival time. And what better reason than Diwali to enjoy !!."The festival of lights" is celebrated all over India . Well there are many stories behind the festival, each having its significant local presence. But apart from all of it, Diwali is a festival which bring people closer. Be it the deepas in front of houses, or the monumental buildings lit up, or be it the colorful decorations.. its full of colors and joy.After all thats what diwali is all about.. a close bond between people. A big concern is the growing pollution levels at the time of festival due to crackers. Promote safe and clean Diwali. Make your life colorful during diwali :)

Mysuru Dasara

Its been a long time since my last blog. But now i have a lot of things to share !! its festive season. Navaratri , Diwali .. all that enjoyment and some facts :). Everyone knows about the grand Mysore Dasara procession. One of the major tourist attractions during the festivities . But not many know about the 400 year old very interesting , intriguing facts in pages of history. I hate history because of the low scores i used to get in schooling days ! :) . But when u find out more about it , its so full of surprises. So after a not so long introduction about what i want to share , ill come to the point .

This is about the family of Mysore Maharajas .And the history books state these interesting facts. During the time of Vijaynagar empire , mysore was a subordinate kingdom , indirectly under the rule of Vijaynagar Kings. But in dew course when Vijaynagar lost its peak and other provinces became powerful the king of mysore at that time declared Mysore as an independent kingdom . It was not long when Vijaynagar gained back its lost power and the king of Mysore was defeated .

But an offensive was raged against the Vijaynagar kingdom by the ministers and army commanders of the Mysore empire . A conspiracy that led to the death of the king of Vijaynagar , leaving Vijaynagar at the mercy of the conspirators who took control of it . Alamelu was the queen of Vijaynagar at that time . Being a very rich empire Vijaynagar queen had a lot of jewelry with her . And her love for these jewels , led to a not so popular but interesting event in history of Mysore dynasty .

The king of Mysore wanted that those jewels be a part of his treasury and planned to have it by force as Alamelu had not agreed to part with it. Alamelu came to know about the intentions of the king . When messengers from the Mysore king arrived , they told her to part with the jewels as it would be made a part of the temple riches. But Alamelu did not budge and went on hiding near the now Talkad. But the kings spies got to know this and tried to take the jewels forcefully from her . Angered by this Alamelu jumped in to the cauvery river and cursed the Mysore king . The curse was :
Let the place where im drowning become a "madu" ( a very deep hole admist of a shallow place beneath water) , and that the whole of Talkad get submerged in sand , and let the King of Mysore not have any kids!!.
400 years after that curse , even now the King of Mysore does not have a kid . Few months after Alamelu's death Talkad got submerged in sand as a result of flooding . Even now the king of Mysore adopts a son . Till date there has not been a single natural heir to the thrown. Interesting point its been happening for almost 400 years now!!. Also the adopted child , who then becomes the King of Mysore will have a successor , as he is not the natural successor of the throne .But this successor wont have no kids!!. Amazing isnt it.
The current maharaja Srikantadutta Narasimharaja Wadiyar is the son of Jaichamarajendra Wadiyar . Srikantadutta Narasimharaja Wadiyar has no kids !!.
